There are a number of easy things you can do at your workplace to reduce the carbon emissions from your business activities. A few things to consider are:
- Turning off one computer for one hour per day reduces the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 132kg per year. This is the same amount that is created per passenger on a flight from Sydney to Melbourne
- Each hour a dishwasher is used, 1.2 kg of CO2 is produced. Operating at 5 hours per week, a dishwasher with an energy efficiency rating of 1-star produces 441kg of CO2 per year.
- Check you have Energy Star activated on your computer.
- Deactivate your screensaver – this wastes energy rather than saving it.
- Turn off lights if absent for more than five minutes.
- Install energy efficient lighting
- Use natural light where possible.
- Shade north and west facing windows in hot summer months
- Fix any door and window gaps to reduce heat loss or gain
- Choose a fridge size based on needs. An average refrigerator produces the same amount of CO2 emissions per year as those produced by driving a car to Perth and back from Sydney! Increasing the energy efficiency rating from a 1-star to 6-star level reduces the CO2 emissions by over 65%.
- Keep the fridge door shut where possible to prevent energy wastage
- Consider using renewable energy sources such as solar for your power needs
