Case Study: Marks & Spencer

Marks_SpencerUK retail giant, Marks & Spencer, launched Plan A in January 2007, setting out 100 environmental commitments to achieve in 5 years. They have now extended Plan A to 180 commitments to achieve by 2015, with the ultimate goal of becoming the world's most sustainable major retailer.

Through Plan A they are working with their customers and suppliers to combat climate change, reduce waste, use sustainable raw materials, trade ethically, and help their customers to lead more sustainable lifestyles.

Some of the objectives of Plan A are:

No operational waste to landfill

Aiming to ensure that M&S operations in the UK and Republic of Ireland (stores, offices and warehouses) will send no waste to landfill.

Food waste (alternative disposal)

Sending all remaining food waste to some form of recycling including composting and anaerobic digestion.

Bin bags

Launching a range of bin bags made from recycled polythene collected from M&S distribution centres.

Customer recycling services

Having introduced a range of recycling initiatives for our customers including a project for used clothing we aim to develop and expand these services.
